Current Reviews...
Engaging dyke seriocomedy "Sugar Sweet" reps Japan's first fictive feature by and about lesbians. Uneven item is too slight for offshore theatrical sales, but will make a solid gay fest/specialized broadcast item, and is a promising calling card for Chinese-born, Malaysian-raised Nippon helmer Desiree Lim.

Making fun of the hetero-male fascination with fake "lesbian action" from the outset, pic posits protag Naomi (Saori Kitagawa) as a struggling filmmaker trying to make a "real" lesbian porn flick for some greasy raincoat producers. But they find her "arty" footage unreleasable, directing her to mimic the previously successful likes of the fake stuff instead. Meanwhile, she's funneling her emotional needs toward a pseudononymous Internet pal. Naomi also has a concurrent TV assignment, where she documents a girl-girl chapter for a series analogous to "Blind Date." She recruits bubbly friend Azusa (Saki) and marketing-exec-by-day, exotic-dancer-by-night Miki (C Snatch Z) as her stars. But Azusa, whose live-in girlfriend has been neglectful of late, soon begins obsessing over her co-thesp, while Miki has designs on Naomi. Too many sex scenes occasionally overwhelm story, but it's all lightly amusing, with good techno tracks driving soundtrack.
